Choose from three different styles for kids to make at home
Kids love to get an Easter basket from the Easter Bunny, but many times they just don't want to wait until Easter. This year, let kids make their own Easter basket in anticipation for the white tailed friend to arrive. Just gather some materials that can be found around the house and let's get started.
Wooden Easter Baskets
- wooden strawberry baskets (1 quart size)
- pastel poster paints in many different pastel colors
- paint brushes, 1-2 for each child
- LOTS of rinse water
- small kitchen sized garbage bags
- Easter grass
- stickers, sequins, ribbon (optional)
Give each child a basket, and a paint brush. You may want to drape a smock or plastic kitchen bag over their clothes to avoid paint splatter. Just cut holes for their head, arms and legs. Let each child paint the basket in various colors. Allow the baskets to dry completely. When the baskets are dried, fill with the Easter grass. Complete the project by cutting out paper eggs from construction paper or fill with candy eggs. You can also glue various decorations, sequins or apply stickers to add personality to the baskets.
Bottle Easter Baskets
- 2 liter soda bottle
- scissors
- stickers, sequin, ribbon, etc... (optional)
Take a 2 liter soda bottle and cut in half to form an Easter Basket. Measure from the bottom about 5 inches, and proceed to cut the bottle. Leave two pieces about 1" wide for the handle. You can decorate with paint, construction paper, buttons and jewels or just use your imagination and let the decorating begin. For this reason, provide the children with markers or paints.
Paper Woven baskets
- pastel colored construction paper, two colors
- scissors
- glue or stapler
Using one piece of paper cut horizontal straight lines about one inch in from side to side across paper, about 1/2 inch a part from each other. The paper should be covered from top to bottom with these slits. Next take the other color of paper and cut 1/2 strips. Weave these strips in and out of the slits in the first paper. When completed with all the strips glue the ends of the strips to the first paper to hold in place. Next fold up the sides to make a basket shape. Staple or glue in place. With a contrasting color make a handle on your basket and staple or glue.
Basket can then be filled with shredded paper to make a nest in the bottom. Kids can also decorate the baskets with glitter, buttons or glitter glue.
